School holidays meets NAIDOC Week for fun and free family entertainment

Goldfields Libraries is sharing quality, joyful, cultural school holiday experiences with local families this July, for free.

From a visiting First Nations rapper to a powerhouse kids entertainer, the lineup combines stories, music and craft, with a special focus on NAIDOC Week.

Programs coordinator Tammy Higgs said the holiday events were always popular, and rising cost of living pressures were making them even more so.

“We know school holidays can hit the family budget hard,” Tammy said.

“We’re ensuring children don’t miss out on memorable experiences that are sometimes educational, but always fun.

“Our program is for everyone, it’s high quality and it’s free, from creative in-house activities to larger professional performances.”

Sydney-based First Nations singer, actress and dancer Majeda Beatty (above) will immerse families in her Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander culture in Bendigo on Friday, July 9.

Tammy said Majeda’s interactive Murri Island Girl performance is in partnership with the City of Greater Bendigo and combines the instruments, artifacts, body paint and costumes of her heritage.

“It’s a great opportunity for families to see someone with her background and learn about First Nations culture, especially during NAIDOC Week,” she said.

She said the other program highlight was Damo’s Rock n’ Read show, at Bendigo, Castlemaine and Romsey libraries on Friday, July 3.

“This Melbourne performer is a powerhouse. Kids love him, parents love him, he’s energetic, cheerful, fun and a very talented musician. He’s the real deal. Anyone who comes along always enjoys the show.”

The libraries also have a Roadhouse Community Screning licence, so will be showing recent family-friendly releases on the big screens in the Bendigo, Castlemaine, Gisborne and Romsey branches.

“Even the traditional holiday trip to the movies can happen with us, without the cost of a ticket,” Tammy said.

“We’re really proud to be a part of family holiday plans, to foster stories, creativity and a sense of community for children.

“Everyone is welcome, we just need to know you’re coming.”
