Dementia expert Rose Capp said the learnings will go both ways when she speaks at Heathcote Library on August 15.
The author of Demystifying Dementia said she was looking forward to speaking in the hometown of the Heathcote Dementia Alliance.
“I know of the group’s many important initiatives and activities and in particular, their leadership role in improving community dementia care and support in tangible ways, including developing customised dementia-friendly care villas,” Rose said.
“It is inspiring to visit a community that has been actively engaged for so many years in advocating for increased understanding about dementia.
“I hope to hear more about the Alliance’s activities during my visit.”
Primarily, Goldfields Libraries has invited Rose to speak so that anyone across the region who’s life is touched by dementia can connect with a leader in the field.
Rose works as a policy advisor at Dementia Australia and teaches in ageing and dementia studies at Flinders University. Her book is known as the essential guide for every aspect of the dementia journey.
“It takes a fundamentally positive perspective and suggests that if we learn more about dementia and how to best support a person living with it, we can ensure that person continues to live a meaningful life,” Rose said.
“I offer many practical tips and ideas on how to provide that support including how to communicate effectively when a person’s cognitive and verbal skills are declining and how to respond appropriately to changed behaviour.”
Rose said she hopes after reading the book or hearing her speak, that people have a clearer understanding of dementia, and the confidence to provide support and care for a family member or friend.
“And while I provide key information, people often share stories, anecdotes, and information about what has worked in caring for their loved ones,” she said.
“It is a supportive session where everyone, including myself, will learn something.”
The event is supported by the City of Greater Bendigo for Positive Ageing and the Heathcote Dementia Alliance. It’s on Saturday, August 15, 2026 from 10.30am at Heathcote Library. Book via this link.
