Works strengthen heart of Bendigo

The Bendigo Library is an even better place to visit thanks to the launch of new bathroom facilities and extra meeting spaces.

The $412,586 project was made possible thanks to grants from the State Government’s Living Libraries Program and the City of Greater Bendigo.

Bendigo West MP Maree Edwards said the improvements made the community hub safer, more accessible and welcoming.

“When we invest in libraries through the Living Libraries Program, it’s also about investing in community, not only the library,” Maree said.

“We’re making sure the library continues to be the heart of Bendigo, and the most important part of Bendigo.”

The works, completed by local construction company Franklin Projects, ensure the public toilet and parent facilities comply with the current National Construction Code, and included:

  • Demolition of the old public toilet area and construction of new self-contained toilet cubicles to improve safety and efficiency
  • Demolition of the former female/nappy change room and refurbishment of this area to provide an all-gender family/carer friendly bathroom
  • Reconfiguration of the Activity Room into office spaces to provide passive surveillance
  • Construction of a dedicated cleaner’s room.

Goldfields Libraries CEO Mark Hands said the works were an important step in creating a safer place for the community.

“They have made Bendigo Library even more welcoming and accessible for everyone who is coming in to enjoy the spaces, the services and the collections,” he said.
