Goldfields Libraries is excited to take part in the Bendigo Writers Festival again this year, hosting three fantastic events. Beginning in 2012, the Bendigo Writers Festival grows stronger each year, celebrating the power of books, encouraging conversation and sparking ideas.

Lucy Sussex Outrageous Fortunes

The adventures of Mary Fortune, crime writer and her criminal son George

Join Lucy Sussex, co-author of Outrageous Fortunes as she tells the gripping story of Australia’s first female writer and her career criminal son. Lucy shares the research and fascinating history of Fortune’s astonishing career and the equally absorbing story of her illegitimate son George. Crime fiction meets true crime in this non-fiction book, when Melbourne’s bohemia consort with the criminal underworld during Victoria’s goldrush era.

Lucy has worked as a librarian, researcher and academic, and has published over 20 books in various genres. She has an abiding interest in women’s lives, Australiana, and crime fiction.

A chef’s journey through India’s rich culinary history

Meet Helly Raichura whose new book The Food of Bharat takes a deep dive into India’s culinary history, illuminating historical insights with delicious recipes from across regional India.

In conversation with Jennifer Alden, Helly will talk about how the book came to be and what her most favourite parts of sharing Indian food with others are.

Helly has featured on MasterChef Australia, and her highly acclaimed Melbourne restaurant Enter Via Laundry showcases India’s culture and regionality on a plate.
