Cool off this Summer at Goldfields Libraries!

Monday 7 December 2015

Cool off this Summer at your local Goldfields Library! The Summer seasonal program is now available, featuring a range of Christmas and Summer activities coming up for all ages.

Christmas activities include family Christmas movies, craft activities, carols from Bendigo Youth Choir and Castlemaine U3A Choir, “Music, Munchies and Mingling” social events and a special Christmas bedtime stories session.

“December is traditionally a busy month for our libraries, with a constant stream of activity leading up to Christmas,” says Goldfields Library Corporation CEO, Chris Kelly.

“This year we are also appealing to the community to donate books to the Bendigo Communities for Children Book Box Libraries project, which provides reading materials for children whose literacy skills are at risk.”

Ms Kelly also encourages adults and children alike to embrace reading this Summer with two regional reading programs available through Goldfields Libraries – the Summer Reading Club and The Summer Read.

The Summer Reading Club encourages children to read 10 books over the Summer holidays with the theme “Lost Worlds”. Member packs and great prizes are on offer to participants.

Similarly, adults can participate in the Summer Read, which includes 10 books written by Victorian authors or telling Victorian stories. Presented by the State Library of Victoria, the Summer Read also incorporates a competition with great prizes on offer.

Another Summer highlight will be the Library Lovers day celebrations, with romantic author talks, the opportunity go on a “blind date with a book”, and to vote for your favourite book.

There are many other activities coming up, including the Summertime Fun for Kids program, Bendigo Young Writers Association programs for young adults, Chinese New Year celebrations, Trace the History of Your House, author talks and technology help sessions.

Residents are also encouraged to take refuge at their local library on days of extreme heat, where they will find air-conditioning, books, magazines and newspapers as well as fun activities, free wifi, and computer and internet access to keep them busy.
