Enjoy an intimate reading hour with three great local authors

Tuesday 11 September 2018

A shared love of the written word will bring community members and three great local authors together for an intimate Australian Reading Hour event this month.

Eaglehawk Library will open its doors on Thursday 20 September to host a Community Reading Party. Special guest readers Glenda Millard, Lorraine Marwood and Lauren Mitchell will share excerpts from their work in an intimate session in the library.

Australian Reading Hour encourages Aussies all across the country to pick up a book and read or listen for an hour, alone or with good company. This year’s theme is ‘take the time’. Whether it’s taking the time to learn, to grow, to escape or to relax, Australian Reading Hour is encouraging people of all ages to either rediscover or introduce themselves to the benefits of reading.

Reading not only increases literacy and numeracy skills in children, it is also shown to help with identity formation, setting them up for success later in life. In adults, it has been shown to reduce stress by 68 percent more than listening to music, going for a walk or having a cup of tea.

“Although Australian Reading Hours is for all ages, we wanted to do something really special for adult lovers of the written word,” said Eaglehawk Library’s Shae Hellstedt. “We’re very excited to have Glenda, Lorraine and Lauren reading some of their work to us, it will be a magical evening,”
