Contours of Our Lives: reflections from the kitchen table

Tuesday 12 February 2019

Goldfields Libraries is excited to launch Contours of Our Lives: reflections from the kitchen table. The result of four writing workshops held at the Dingee Library Agency, Contours of Our Lives is a journey through the memories and recollections of seniors living in the country communities of the Shire of Loddon.

Guided by the hand of local award-winning author Lorraine Marwood, participants were encouraged to reminisce about their childhood, in particular, memories of their childhood kitchen.

The resulting stories are as diverse as their writers themselves and include everything from ruining mum’s ‘pride and joy’ (Laminex kitchen table) and playing hidey in the kitchen cupboards to resisting the urge to eat all the raw apple pie dough.

“Reading through these stories, you really do get a sense of what it was like growing up in these communities and just how pivotal the kitchen table was to families’ lives,” says Goldfields Libraries Community Library Officer, and contributor to the book, Liz Plumridge.

“It was stimulating listening to the workshop participants stories and then reminiscing about my own childhood kitchen. Lorraine was a great mentor and workshop facilitator, sharing various writing techniques and styles whilst encouraging our efforts. This lead to an improvement in our writing skills and great satisfaction in the final result.”

The book launch of Contours of Our Lives will be held at the Dingee Library Agency (Dingee Railway Station) from 10.30am on Wednesday 27 February, 2019. All are welcome to attend and refreshments will be available.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase for $10.
