Add to the Castlemaine Library’s time capsule

If you like the idea of sharing information about your life with generations to come, make sure you drop into the Castlemaine Library and add your contribution to their time capsule.

“Works to replace the library floor will start in July so we’re taking this opportunity to bury a time capsule while the floor is removed,” said Jess Saunders, Castlemaine Library Manager.

“You can write a letter or fill out a form. We’d love to see submissions from people of all ages and backgrounds,” she said.

“The pages will be copied onto archival paper so they have the best chance of surviving the test of time.”

There will be an activity during the first week of school holidays for people to drop into the library and write something for the time capsule. The sessions will be held during library opening hours from Monday 1 to Friday 5 July.

“We’ll take submissions up until Monday 22 July. Everyone has a story to tell so we’d love to hear from you!” said Ms Saunders.

The Castlemaine Library upgrade includes replacing structural flooring and shelving, installing new seating, interior painting and other minor works.

“The original section of the library floor dates back to the 1850s, so we may even find something interesting once the floor is pulled up. I have my fingers crossed that we uncover another time capsule!” said Ms Saunders.

Don’t forget while the two-month project is underway the library will be relocated to the Market Building in Mostyn Street, Castlemaine. The library will be closed on Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 July while the collection is relocated.

“We’ll relocate a lot of our collection to the pop-up library and we’ll have computers, printing and wi-fi available. Regular programs like Baby Rhyme Time and Storytime will continue at the Ray Bradfield Room at Victory Park, just behind the Market Building,” she said.

The Phee Broadway Theatre will remain open for theatre performances during the works but the theatre and library foyer will be closed while the works are underway.

“We know the foyer is a popular meeting place after school so we encourage students and their parents to arrange another meeting location from term three until early September.”

“For those who regularly meet up at the library the Castlemaine Community House has kindly offered a room for quiet study groups or tutor sessions. The room will be available during 9.00am to 3.00pm weekdays at their building on Templeton Street.”
