Field of poppies planted in Woodend for ANZAC Day 2015

Monday 13 April 2015

The Woodend Library in conjunction with the Woodend RSL will ‘create’ a field of crafted red poppies at the Woodend Clock tower and Woodend Library to mark the ANZAC Centenary on the 25 April 2015.

The tribute is part of the 5000 poppies project, a nationwide community crafting project that began in Melbourne in 2013.

Woodend Library Manager, Lulu Cockram has been overwhelmed with the popularity of the project.

“The aim for the Melbourne organisers was to create crafted red poppies and display them in Federation Square for the ANZAC centenary.

“Due to the popularity of the project they have encouraged local communities to stage their own displays.

“We have been working with the Woodend RSL, Macedon Ranges Shire, local businesses, children and community members to create poppies for the Woodend project.

“Michael McCoy one of Australia’s leading landscape designers will also be helping us to design our display.

“We currently have over 2000 poppies for the day and will be exploring options for a more permanent display following the centenary” Ms Cockram says

The poppies will be on display at the Woodend Clock tower and Woodend Library from the 25 April 2015.
