Castlemaine Seed Library Launch

Thursday 22 September 2016

Castlemaine Library is delighted to launch its new Seed Library on Thursday 6 October, with guest speakers including journalist Genevieve Barlow of The Weekly Times.

The Seed Library initiative makes it possible for library patrons to “borrow” up to three packets of vegetable seeds to take home and grow in their gardens.

Seed borrowers are encouraged to let some of their plants go to flower in order to collect new seeds, and to bring them back to The Hub Plot garden in Templeton Street to replenish the supply of seeds available for loan.

The project is a collaboration between Castlemaine Library, the Growing Abundance Project and the Hub Plot, with seeds sourced from The Lost Seed, a company specialising in all open-pollinated varieties.

Seeds available will include tomatoes, pumpkins, beans, zucchini and parsley.

“Seed saving” instructions will be printed onto the seed packets. Growing Abundance and the Hub Plot will hold seed saving workshops in the coming weeks for those who wish to learn more.

The Seed Library will be launched at Castlemaine Library at 5pm on Thursday 6 October. Entry is free and bookings are not required.
